How do we divide fractions?

Dividing fractions is actually very simple. Let's use this example: 2/3 / 4/7. Here are three easy steps you have to take to solve this problem:

Step 1: Find the reciprocal of 4/7 which is 7/4.

Step 2: Change the division sign to a multiplication sign.
           2/3 x 4/7

Step 3: Multiply the fractions and simplify if possible.
           2/3 x 4/7 = 8/21 (you cannot simplify this fraction any further).

Wasn't that simple? So what do you do if you have a problem like this: 2/5 / 5 1/2.
Here are four steps you have to take in order to solve that problem:

Step 1: Change 5 1/2 into an improper fraction which is 11/2.

Step 2: Find the reciprocal of 11/2 which is 2/11.

Step 3: Change the division sign into a multiplication sign.
           2/5 x 2/11.

Step 4: Multiply the two fractions and then simplify if possible.
           2/5 x 2/11 = 4/55 (you cannot simplify any further).

Important things to remember when dividing fractions:

  • Find the reciprocal of the second fraction.
  • Always change the division sign into a multiplication sign.
  • When you change a mixed number into an improper fraction remember to find its reciprocal.
  • Simplify if possible.

Key terms:

Reciprocal: A quantity or a function that is related to another so their product together
                 is one.

Improper fraction: A fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator.

Dividing fractions (song):

"Dividing fractions, as easy as pie,
Flip the second fraction, then multiply,
And don't forget to simplify,
Before it's time to say goodbye."

Or you can use this:

"Leave me, change me, turn me over."

Isn't dividing fractions... simply simple?
